SOLOMON Islands Media Association (MASI) last Friday won the bid to host the sixth Pacific Media Summit in Honiara in 2020.

SOLOMON Islands Media Association (MASI) last Friday won the bid to host the sixth Pacific Media Summit in Honiara in 2020.
MASI president Charles Kadamana announced this from Nuku’alofa, Tonga, last Friday where he’s attending the Pacific Islands News Association (PINA) fifth bi-annual gathering.
“I wish to thank the PINA board for accepting the bid I submitted for MASI to host the next summit,” an elated Mr Kadamana said.
“I also wish to acknowledge Prime Minister Rick Houenipwela for throwing his weight behind the bid with a supporting letter from the government,” he added.
“It’s the prime minister’s letter that made the difference.”
The Pacific Media Summit is the biggest media gathering in the region that normally brings together up to 100 participants.
It is held every two years.
Mr Kadamana said organizing an event of this size can be challenging and has called on all MASI members to put their heads and hands together.
“While this may be challenging, it’s also an opportunity for MASI members to stand united and work for the common good,” he said.
Mr Kadamana said his executive will start the process of preparing for the summit as soon as he arrives back from Tonga.
The MASI president also congratulated Hilda Lamani and Georgina Kekea on their elections to boards of two regional media bodies.
Both attended the fifth Pacific Media Summit, which ended in Nuku’alofa last night.
Ms Lamani, a proprietor of the Solomon Star newspaper, has been elected to become an executive member of the PINA board.
In her role, she will represent the region’s print media on the board.
Ms Kekea, a sub-editor and chief of staff of Island Sun newspaper, has been elected as vice president of the newly established Pacific Environment Journalist Network (PEJN).
Headquartered in Tonga, the network, which was launched Monday in Nukualofa, was established to focus its reporting on environmental and climate change issues.
“The election of Ms Lamani and Ms Kekea to these two regional media bodies is a huge stride for female media workers in Solomon Islands,” Mr Kadamana said.
“As president, I am very proud to see members of MASI taking up responsibilities in regional media bodies.”
The fifth Pacific Media Summit concluded yesterday with the election Papua New Guinea’s Kora Nou as PINA’s new president.
Mr Nou, managing director of PNG’s National Broadcasting Commission (NBC), replaces Moses Stephen from Vanuatu, who held that post over the last 10 years.
Katalinia Tohi of Tonga was elected vice president.
