Leonard Louma, the Director General (DG) of the Melanesian Spearhead Group (MSG) Secretariat, will be bestowed with a special honour during the opening ceremony of the 7th Melanesian Arts and Cultural Festival (MACFEST) on Wednesday, July 19, 2023.
Chief Reuben Neriam, the representative of Aneityum in the Malvatumauri National Council of Chiefs, confirmed this announcement to the Vanuatu Daily Post.
Chief Neriam, leading a group of 28 participants from Aneityum to MACFEST, stated that they would lead the parade through the main streets of Port Vila to Saralana, carrying Mr. Louma in a traditional weaving basket.
In accordance with the customs, traditions, and culture of Aneityum, the basket used for ceremonial events like MACFEST is viewed exclusively by those who have paid the right to do so.
During this period, individuals must isolate themselves from their communities and abstain from sexual relations.
Chief Neriam also mentioned that his group would participate in showcasing traditional activities, including food preservation and canoe selling. Coming from the southernmost island of Vanuatu, they were the first participants to arrive in Port Vila last weekend, albeit in reduced numbers due to transportation challenges.
Chief Neriam and his team are currently residing in the host village of Erakor on Efate, where they will be staying for the duration of the festival.
This honour bestowed upon Mr. Louma reflects the cultural significance and deep respect shown by the Aneityum Island community towards MSG’s role and contribution to the Melanesian region.
